Scout Promise, Law, and Motto

These must be known and understood by all scouts in order to earn their Membership Badge

Scout Promise

I promise to do my best, to do my duty, to God and to my country, to help other people and to keep the Scout Law

The Scout Promise was first introduced by the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell, and is usually recited at Scout meetings while making the Scout Sign. The Scout Promise varies from country to country as a result of differences in culture and traditions, but all follow the three principles of:

  1. Duty to God
  2. Duty to others
  3. Duty to Self

Scout Law

There are seven Scout Laws that scouts must strive to live by:

  1. A Scout is to be trusted
  2. A Scout is loyal
  3. A Scout is friendly and considerate
  4. A Scout is a brother to all Scouts
  5. A Scout has courage in all difficulties
  6. A Scout makes good use of his time, and is careful of his possessions and properties
  7. A Scout has respect for himself and others

Similar to the Scout Promise, Scout Laws differ from country to country, but all are rooted in the original laws written by Baden-Powell

Scout Motto

Be Prepared

The Scout Motto was founded on Baden-Powell's initials, and requires scouts to always be ready to carry out the Scout Promise.
